Are you tired of the same old boring vacations? Sun, sand, and sea can only entertain you for so long. That’s why cannabis tourism is becoming increasingly popular among vacationers looking for something a little more… stimulating.

Not only can you explore new destinations, but you can also indulge in a little greenery while you’re at it. No, we’re not talking about the lush foliage of the Amazon rainforest. We’re talking about cannabis, the herb that’s taken the world by storm (pun intended).

With cannabis becoming more widely accepted, travelers are looking for ways to incorporate it into their vacations. That’s where cannabis tourism comes in. It’s a new way to experience the world, and it’s changing the way we travel. In this blog post, we’ll explore the future of travel and how cannabis tourism is shaping it. So, sit back, relax, and take a hit. It’s time to explore the wonderful world of cannabis vacations.

Research Destinations

One of the first steps in planning your cannabis vacation is to choose a destination. Luckily, there are plenty of popular destinations that are known for being cannabis-friendly. Here are just a few:

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam has long been a hub for cannabis tourism. It’s home to famous coffee shops where visitors can legally purchase and consume cannabis products. In addition to its thriving cannabis culture, Amsterdam is known for its beautiful canals, historic architecture, and vibrant nightlife.

Colorado, United States

Colorado was one of the first states in the US to legalize recreational cannabis. Visitors can purchase and consume cannabis products at licensed dispensaries throughout the state. Colorado is also known for its stunning natural scenery, with popular attractions like Rocky Mountain National Park and the Garden of the Gods.

Jamaica

Jamaica has a long history with cannabis, with many locals using it for medicinal and spiritual purposes. Visitors can legally purchase and consume cannabis products at licensed dispensaries throughout the island. In addition to its cannabis culture, Jamaica is known for its beautiful beaches, reggae music, and laid-back vibe.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona has become a popular destination for cannabis enthusiasts in recent years. While cannabis is technically illegal in Spain, there are private cannabis clubs throughout the city where members can purchase and consume cannabis products in a safe and legal environment. Barcelona is also known for its stunning architecture, delicious food, and vibrant nightlife.

These are just a few of the many cannabis-friendly destinations around the world. When choosing a destination, it’s important to consider factors like the legality of cannabis, the cost of travel, and the accessibility of the destination. With a little research, you’re sure to find the perfect cannabis vacation spot for you.

factors to consider when choosing a destination (e.g. legality of cannabis, cost, accessibility, etc.)

When planning your cannabis vacation, it’s important to choose a destination that suits your needs and preferences. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a cannabis-friendly destination:

Legality of Cannabis

The legality of cannabis varies widely from country to country and even within different states or regions. It’s important to research the laws and regulations related to cannabis in your desired destination to ensure that you are traveling safely and legally. Some destinations, like Amsterdam and Colorado, have legalized recreational cannabis, while others may only allow medical cannabis

use or have strict laws against it.

Cost

The cost of travel and accommodations can vary widely depending on the destination. When planning your cannabis vacation, consider your budget and look for destinations that offer affordable options. Keep in mind that the cost of cannabis products can also vary widely depending on the destination, so factor this into your budget as well.

Accessibility

Consider the ease of travel to your desired destination. Some cannabis-friendly destinations may be located far away or may require multiple modes of transportation to get there. Consider how much time and money you are willing to spend on travel and look for destinations that are easily accessible.

Culture and Atmosphere

Different cannabis-friendly destinations may have different cultures and atmospheres that appeal to different types of travelers. For example, Amsterdam is known for its bustling coffee shop culture, while Colorado offers a more laid-back, outdoor-focused vibe. Consider what type of atmosphere you are looking for in your cannabis vacation and look for destinations that match your preferences.

By considering these factors when choosing a cannabis-friendly destination, you can ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable trip that meets your needs and preferences.

Choose Accommodations

When planning your cannabis vacation, it’s important to choose accommodations that are cannabis-friendly. Here are some different types of cannabis-friendly accommodations to consider:

Hotels

Some hotels have started to cater to cannabis tourists by allowing smoking on their premises and offering cannabis-themed packages. However, it’s important to check the hotel’s smoking policy and ensure that it allows cannabis consumption before booking your stay.

Resorts

There are also cannabis-friendly resorts that offer cannabis-themed activities, classes, and events. These resorts often have designated smoking areas and may even provide cannabis products to guests.

Vacation Rentals

Vacation rentals, such as Airbnb, can be a great option for cannabis tourists. Many Airbnb hosts allow smoking on their property and may even provide cannabis products to guests. However, it’s important to check the rental’s smoking policy and ensure that it allows cannabis consumption before booking your stay.

When choosing cannabis-friendly accommodations, here are some factors to consider:

Proximity to Dispensaries

If you plan on purchasing and consuming cannabis products during your vacation, it’s important to choose accommodations that are located near dispensaries.

Smoking Policy

Legality

Ensure that the activities you choose are legal in the destination you’re visiting. Some activities, such as smoking in public places, may be illegal in certain areas.

Cost

Some cannabis-related activities can be expensive, so it’s important to budget accordingly. Consider looking for discounts or package deals to save money.

Make sure that the activities you choose are safe and suitable for your skill level. Some activities, such as extreme sports, may not be suitable for everyone.

Here are some resources for finding cannabis-related activities:

Tour Companies

Many tour companies offer cannabis-themed tours and activities, such as dispensary tours, cooking classes, and outdoor adventures.

Essential Items to Pack for a Cannabis Vacation

When packing for a cannabis vacation, there are some essential items that you should bring to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience:

ID

Make sure to bring a valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, to prove your age when purchasing cannabis products.

Cash

Many dispensaries and cannabis-related businesses may not accept credit cards, so it’s important to bring cash for purchases.

Smoking Accessories

If you plan on consuming cannabis products, be sure to pack smoking accessories such as a pipe, rolling papers, and a lighter. Alternatively, consider bringing edibles or other non-smoking products if smoking is not your preferred method of consumption.

Prescription Medications

If you use prescription medications, make sure to bring enough for the duration of your trip.

Sunscreen and Bug Spray

If you plan on spending time outdoors, don’t forget to pack sunscreen and bug spray to protect your skin from the sun and insects.

Items to Avoid Bringing

While there are some essential items to pack for a cannabis vacation, there are also items that you should avoid bringing:

Large Quantities of Cannabis

It’s important to follow the laws and regulations of the destination you’re visiting. Bringing large quantities of cannabis may not only be illegal but may also raise suspicion and cause unnecessary problems.

Paraphernalia That May Raise Suspicion

Avoid bringing any paraphernalia that may raise suspicion, such as bongs or dab rigs. Stick to discreet smoking accessories such as pipes or vaporizers.

Illegal Substances

Do not bring any illegal substances or drugs, as this can lead to serious legal consequences.

By packing these essential items and avoiding items that may cause suspicion, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable cannabis vacation. Remember to always follow the laws and regulations of the destination you’re visiting, and be respectful of the local culture and customs.

In conclusion, planning a cannabis vacation can be a fun and exciting experience for those looking to explore new destinations and immerse themselves in the cannabis culture. At Nicole Butler’s bed-and-breakfast, cannabis is in the candy that greets guests at check-in, the homemade shrimp and grits and other meals she serves, and the snacks she sets out for anyone who gets the munchies.

“I’ve really just tried to give people what they’re used to, just with the added element of cannabis,” said Butler.

With permission from her landlord, Butler in 2018 began listing her 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom townhouse in Washington, D.C. on CannaVacays.com, which connects guests with hosts who allow marijuana use on their properties.

The site is still tiny, with just 2,000 active listings compared with Airbnb’s 6 million. But the niche market of cannabis-friendly accommodations is gaining interest, with recreational marijuana use now legal in 19 states and Washington. Tourism for cannabis more broadly is also now a $17 billion industry, according to recent data from Forbes.

Some hosts of cannabis-friendly rentals go beyond simply allowing people to smoke or consume weed on site. With rooms starting at $420 per night, for example, Butler offers a fully stocked cannabis bar with a variety of strains to choose from as well as yoga, CBD massages and cannabis education.

A hairstylist before the pandemic, Butler began managing the bed-and-breakfast full time when the salon she worked at closed during the pandemic. She said the business started to sustain itself after about a year.

“I think the pandemic made people really appreciate experiences, self-care, and just doing things that make them feel good,” said Butler.

A growing trend

Cannabis sales in the U.S. are projected to climb from $25 billion in 2021 to $42 billion in 2026, according to cannabis market research firm BDSA.

Among those looking to capitalize on the growing industry is Sean Roby, who launched BudandBreakfast.com in 2015. Homeowners can list their properties for short-term bookings in states where recreational or medicinal cannabis use is legal. When he first started the site, Roby said his business partners were doubtful about whether people would buy into the idea of letting guests smoke cannabis on their properties.

“We get dozens of bookings per day now,” he said.

On the site, listings indicate where in the house smoking is allowed, if cannabis will be provided or if it’s BYOB — bring-your-own-bud. They also include information on local dispensaries and cannabis-friendly events happening in the area.

“We have places that are booked out six months in advance,” Roby said.

Florida, one of the top vacation destinations in the U.S., still does not allow recreational cannabis use. But after voters approved a bill in 2016 allowing medicinal use on private properties, Mack, an Uber and Lyft driver at the time, saw an opportunity to cash in.

“People do not want to be inconvenienced when they smoke and some actually have medical needs,” Mack said. “But when people travel to Florida, if they do smoke for whatever reason, the only place that they can do that is at a private residence.”

Mack cross-lists on Vibesbnb and Airbnb. He said people can either book one of his listings on Airbnb or go directly to his site for cheaper booking.

According to Airbnb’s community policy, cannabis possession and use is allowed “in locations where it is legal and does not violate any house rules.” However, the company does not allow users to directly search for cannabis-friendly rentals, or allow its hosts to list their rentals as such.

“If a guest is curious about a Host’s host rules on cannabis in their listing, we encourage guests to contact the Host ahead of booking to ask them for more information,” Airbnb said in a statement.

Mack took his plans for Vibesbnb to investors in 2019 after finding success listing his own, then other apartments that he rented, as cannabis-friendly stays on sites including Airbnb and Vrbo. He got around the site’s rules by putting “420 friendly” in the description, which let people find him through Google searches.

“I’m trying to become like the Airbnb of cannabis in Florida,” Mack said.

Cashing in

The cannabis industry’s move into the mainstream caught Jeremiah Swain’s attention while he was a student at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration.

“There are so many opportunities that the Black community is missing out on because of its traumatic response to marijuana, because of this traumatic history with the plant,” Swain said.

Swain and his classmate Cameron Wesley Scott founded a research-based cannabis company in Ithaca, New York. Swain said he hopes it will expand into one of upstate New York’s first boutique cannabis hotels, with about 65 rooms.

“We’re looking at mid- to late 2025, depending on how quickly we close our fundraising,” he said.

Construction hasn’t started, but he said he envisions an atrium-style area with live plants, spas and studios for art and yoga.

For now, the pair are cultivating cannabis for the recreational adult-use market in New York state through his 8th Wonder Cannabis Company. They received $300,000 in angel investments, but are still raising money to build the hotel.

Swain said the hotel, which he called “the nexus of cannabis and hospitality,” will be what allows minority entrepreneurs like him a chance to break into the industry.

Cannabis may not be legal in every US state, but the places that permit recreational use have carved out a unique corner in the travel industry.

Weed-infused tourism is a $17 billion industry despite only being legal in 19 states. As people become more comfortable experimenting with it, we’re seeing more weed-friendly travel guides for those who want to experience the high life.

Upgraded Points — a site dedicated to information on all things travel and reward programs — ranked the best and worst places for a “canna-cation” based on 26 factors including cost and weed friendly activities.

On Thursday, President Biden moved to pardon thousands with federal marijuana convictions and encourage states to follow suit. If you’re feeling more empowered to dive into the world of cannabis, here are the top 10 best cities for a ganja getaway, according to Upgraded Points.

10. Las Vegas, Nevada

weed enthusiast's getaway

Although the use of weed is prohibited in public places, Las Vegas still managed to crack the top 10 best cities. Travelers can find activities and places to stay that permit the use of cannabis — including cannabis bus tours and smoking at the Las Vegas location of popular chain Topgolf.

Overall score out of 50: 32.19

9. San Jose, California

weed enthusiast's getaway

Like another California city on the list, San Jose’s location in the Bay Area means you’re just an hour away from San Francisco. You’ve heard of food delivery services, but in San Jose you can get weed delivered to your door.

Overall score out of 50: 32.50

8. Colorado Springs, Colorado

weed enthusiast's getaway

According to Upgraded Points, Colorado is the third cheapest place to buy an ounce of marijuana for an average cost of $241.75. It’s no wonder three Colorado cities have landed on the list — including Colorado Springs.

The creative weed user might enjoy painting some “pothead pottery.”

Overall score out of 50: 33.95

7. Henderson, Nevada

Inside The Source+ dispensary in Henderson, NV

Henderson landed itself in the top 10 thanks to its 118 weed-friendly Airbnb listings per 100,000 people, according to Upgraded Points.

Like others on the list, its wide offering of affordable lodging where weed is allowed earned it the seventh spot. And, of course, there are multiple local dispensaries to visit.

Overall score out of 50: 34.89

6. Scottsdale, Arizona

weed enthusiast's getaway

Located just 13 miles outside of Phoenix, Scottsdale, offers cheaper accommodations with a proximity to activities, including a cannabis-infused dinner with private chefs.

Overall score out of 50: 35.45

5. Portland, Oregon

weed enthusiast's getaway

According to Upgraded Points, Portland offers a wide variety of fun that doesn’t just allow the use of cannabis, but also includes it in the activity.

Yoga enthusiasts can enjoy ganja yoga where each session begins with marijuana use followed by a yoga class for all levels. Wake-and-bake drag shows also are not to be missed if you’re in Portland, Upgrade Points says.

Overall score out of 50: 36.09

4. Boulder, Colorado

weed enthusiast's getaway

The city of Boulder describes itself as a “perfect balance of urban and outdoors.” In addition to being able to enjoy a joint while you hike, it offers cannabis tours of local dispensaries for those who want a look behind the scenes of the industry.

Overall score out of 50: 36.70

3. Oakland, California

weed enthusiast's getaway

Coming in at number three, Oakland offers its very own Cannabis Trail — a map of cannabis-friendly businesses and activities for visitors. Situated in the Bay Area of California, the city has proximity to San Francisco and the wine country as well.

According to Upgraded Points, Oakland is the cheapest city for a four-day cannabis vacation for one person.

Overall score out of 50: 36.90

2. Portland, Maine

weed enthusiast's getaway

Like Henderson, Portland, Maine, finds itself on this traveler’s list for its many 420-friendly stays. Activities include a walking tour for the cannabis curious and many “bud and breakfasts.”

Overall score out of 50: 37.68

1. Denver, Colorado

weed enthusiast's getaway

Denver ranks number one on Upgraded Points’ list by quite a few points. According to the site, cannabis-friendly accommodations are much more affordable compared to cities like Los Angeles or Reno, Nevada.

Those planning a trip to Colorado’s capital can add a paint-and-puff class to their itinerary if they want to paint while enjoying marijuana.

Imagine traveling in a blissed-out haze of smoke? Or having edibles served for breakfast at your hotel? That’s the promise of a weed vacation, a growing segment of tourism dedicated to supporting cannabis-friendly accommodation, tours, and experiences.

What exactly is a 420 vacation? Depending on the local regulations, it can look quite different from one region to the next. But at the very least, a 420 trip should create a safe space to enjoy your medicine and offer information on local dispensaries, tours, and activities.

But that’s just the start. Many destinations are taking this type of tourism to entirely new levels. From California to Jamaica, you’ll find all-inclusive cannabis resorts offering open weed bars, infused meals, and free vaporizers along with every booking.

What are the most 420-friendly places in the US?

Where is 420 friendly? With more than 18 states and counting supporting adult-use recreational cannabis, the market for this type of travel is rapidly expanding.

At the time of writing, the states with the biggest 420 hotel footprint are still California and Colorado, two of the states with the longest history of legalization.

Before booking anywhere, double-check the state and municipal regulations on the accommodation, transportation, and tour rules. Unfortunately, not every hotel offering 420 rooms is in a legal state.

best 420 vacations

So, where should you go on your next 420 vacation?

The best weed vacations start right in the USA. Check out the West Coast, from Los Angeles to Nevada to Northern California, for accommodations and experiences catering to the cannabis lifestyle. Colorado is another state with big stoner vibes, supporting all things green.

What if you want to leave your home country? If you seek a safe space to imbibe in the green on an international trip, stick with Jamaica. It’s arguably the only country in the world with cannabis baked into the local culture.

Ask yourself as you explore the growing number of 420 listings, “Where do the stoners live?” Chances are, you’ll have a good time on your 420 trips if you follow the stoners.

Weed vacations: the future of cannabis tourism in the US

Cannabis tourism in the US will genuinely take off only once federal legislation goes through. The country is at a tipping point, and, likely, changes to the Controlled Substances Act are not that far off.

At the start of 2022, several bills were heading through government houses, with bipartisan support and widespread societal support for the legalization of weed.
Once the federal government makes it easier to operate a weed-focused business like a hotel or resort, the US will see a boom in cannabis vacation

“All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine,” said iconic surfer dude Jeff Spicoli in the 1982 boomer classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Forty years later, Spicoli would be so stoked. Cannabis tourism is trending, and there has never been more buzz around cannabis-friendly activities and destinations, especially for pandemic-weary travelers in the US.

Findings from a 2020 study conducted by MMGY Travel Intelligence and Enlightn Strategies indicated that prior to the pandemic, interest in cannabis-related travel was already emerging among a significant subset of leisure travelers.

Now, with COVID travel restrictions lifted and more US states legalizing recreational cannabis, it’s more possible than ever to plan an infused vacation itinerary that includes unique, immersive experiences and destinations.

Experience unique cannabis tours

“I’ve been getting a great response to my tours now that pandemic restrictions have been lifted,” Amy Price, co-founder of Higher Way Travel told Weedmaps. “But people now are expressing concern about gas prices and inflation, so, they’re being extra selective of the trips they do take.” Price has 18 years of experience in hospitality and wellness and has been hosting cannabis-inclusive tours and events since 2008.

She added that spots for Higher Way’s cannabis tours usually fill up within two weeks of being announced.

“The most popular tour, hands down, was ‘Baked on the Beach’ in Jamaica. We held the event there during the week of 4/20, three years in a row pre-pandemic. This year, we’re bringing it to the North Shore of Oahu,” she said.

420-friendly summer vacation

“This event includes daily yoga on the beach, a garden tour, a garden party with a traditional luau, a private bus tour, a private catamaran cruise, swimming at the base of a waterfall, tie-dying, tropical fruit and cannabis terpene pairing, and getting a local’s point of view. The trip coincides with the peak viewing nights during the Perseid meteor shower (August 11 – 14) so we will be stargazing and meteor-watching each night.”

The price per person for Baked on the Beach Oahu is $1,300, which doesn’t include airfare or accommodations but does include tasty waves — at the North Shore’s famous Banzai Pipeline — and a cool buzz. Spicoli approved.

Follow a curated cannabis trail

Keep heading down the coast and arrive in California and the Bay Area with its robust cannabis culture and community. While San Francisco famously hosts the legendary 4/20 Festival every April 20 on Hippy Hill in Golden Gate Park, if you go across the bay, the city of Oakland recently opened the Oakland Cannabis Trail, “a curated, immersive trip through our amazing neighborhoods. Points of interest include premium cannabis retail shops and their recommended food spots, plus sensory attractions covering art, nature, and cultural experiences.”

The project was developed by the local tourism board Visit Oakland and leading local cannabis retailers, including pioneering retailers Harborside and Cookies Oakland, among others.

Nearby, the Cannabis Trail Project starts in San Francisco, winds its way through Sonoma County, and ends in Humboldt, with ten cultural markers along the route. Each landmark commemorates a significant event in Northern California’s cannabis history.

Midwestern legal states also are establishing infrastructure for cannabis tourism. Michigan, which legalized recreational use in 2018, recently launched the tourism organization, Michigan Cannabis Trail, to promote cannabis tourism and businesses including retailers, restaurants, and lodging, as well as provide visitor information on local rules and regulations.

Head to a cannabis-centric event or film festival

Cannabis events are attracting more attention as an option for adding something extra to a basic vacation, from guided tours to comedy shows to art parties, and more. For cannabis enthusiasts seeking activities close to home on a “staycation” or on the road, online ticket vendor Eventbrite has a category for “420 events.”

In Hollywood, California, near the corner of Hollywood and Vine, the Cannabis and Movies Club rooftop event, held at the historic Montalbán Theater, has been selling out nights on its 2022 schedule.

“We were recently highlighted by Secret Los Angeles, in their ’70 Fantastic Things to Do in LA’ article, which helped to explode our popularity,” said Rico Montanez, co-founder of Cannabis and Movies Club.

“Word of mouth is also beginning to spread as we are one of the only places in Los Angeles where people can hang out with friends and enjoy cannabis regularly. Many of our new members are tourists who are so excited to experience cannabis in a legally safe environment for the first time ever. We feel the club is challenging the stigma and introducing a whole new community to the wide and ever-evolving industry of cannabis,” he added.

So far, rooftop Cannabis and Movies Club screenings of Up in SmokeThe 40-Year-Old VirginFriday, and Pulp Fiction have sold out and movie nights are scheduled until Labor Day, including Dazed and ConfusedThe Empire Strikes BackTeam America: World Police, and Nacho Libre, among others.

“We rotate our cannabis brand sponsors so members are consistently experiencing innovative new brands and products, but our show-stopping Dab Bar and knowledgeable Dab Artists are probably the club’s most popular feature. We also have a rotating delivery partner every week offering incredible deals to our members. From bongs rentals to blankets we strive to create a seamless and truly one-of-a-kind unforgettable experience for all our guests,” Montanez described.

Growing interest in international cannabis destinations

It seems it’s only a matter of time until cannabis tourism expands globally. The European Cannabis Market Survey, issued in April by European cannabis wholesale distribution company Bloomwell Group, found that 65 percent of Americans surveyed said they would travel to a city or country to experience a legal market.

Germany, the focus of the Bloomwell study, may be poised to be the first European country to legalize recreational cannabis. In the study, 66 percent of Americans surveyed said they would visit a consumption lounge in Germany, once legalized.

With the summer 2022 travel season well underway, the US Travel Organization’s Monthly Travel Data for June found:

  • For the first time since the start of the pandemic, travel spending ($100 billion) was 3 percent above 2019 levels, in April 2022
  • More than one-quarter — 28 percent — of travelers plan to spend significantly more this summer over their 2019 travel budgets for marquee trips, due to higher prices as well as accumulated savings
  • Nearly six in ten American travelers — 59 percent — said rising gas prices will impact their decision to travel in the next six months

Whether cannabis-curious or seasoned enthusiast, for adventurous travelers and tourists that want infused, immersive getaways, the summer, and a new world, is waiting.

With cannabis becoming legal in more and more places around the world, cannabis vacations have also become increasingly popular. If you’d like to indulge a bit while experiencing an unforgettable destination, consider heading to one of these great spots.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

BEST PLACES TO STAY

Starting out with the most obvious destination, Amsterdam is a place that travelers have been visiting for years in order to experience walking into a “coffee shop,” buying marijuana from a rather extensive menu of choices and lighting up right there to enjoy it. While, that’s now been made possible in many other places around the world, it’s still a great spot to consider for a cannabis vacation. After indulging, if you’re there in the spring, you can check out the kaleidoscope of colors at the world’s largest flower garden in Keukenhof, or explore one of the city’s myriad of fascinating museums.

The Algarve, Portugal

BEST PLACES TO STAY

Portugal decriminalized all drugs nearly two decades ago, which means you can visit its beautiful destinations and enjoy a little 420 too. The Algarve, the country’s southernmost region, is renowned for its stunning beaches, where the long expanses of soft golden sands are overlooked by green pines and ochre cliffs. Combined with its mild climate which includes 300 days of sunshine a year and the clear waters of the sea that are often warm and calm, this is a place that’s ideal for relaxation as well as outdoor activities. There are about 125 miles of beaches between the southwest coast near Aljezur and the eastern end close to Vila Real de Santo Antonio. All offer a unique experience, some idyllic for romance, others perfect for swimming, and still others that are nearly deserted, where nature is unspoiled and preserved in an almost wild state.

Nederland and the Rocky Mountains, Colorado

BEST PLACES TO STAY

Arguably the state’s quirkiest town, Nederland is internationally famous for its “Frozen Dead Guys” festival which celebrates a Norwegian immigrant whose dead body is still frozen in a Tuff Shed. And, not surprisingly, it’s also a town filled with hippies, creative types and marijuana dispensaries. Pop into one and then enjoy the great outdoors and fresh air of the Rockies. Brainard Lake is a great spot for fishing, hiking and camping for the ultimate cannabis-friendly nature retreat – just be sure to enjoy it in your tent or another private spot as it’s only legal in this state when consumed privately.

Tenerife, Canary Islands

BEST PLACES TO STAY

Tenerife, the largest Canary Island off the coast of Spain and West Africa, is known for its gorgeous beaches, pleasant year-round climate, tasty cuisine and around 50 cannabis social clubs that showcase locally-grown marijuana, Moroccan hash, and locally-produced concentrates. As they operate in a legal gray area, you may need to hookup with a local ahead of time to help you gain access to “the club.” Once you do, you can toke up and enjoy the ride up to the summit of the highest mountain in Spain, Mount Teide via cable car, take a refreshing swim in lava rock pools or hike ancient forest trails in the Anaga Mountains.

Oregon

BEST PLACES TO STAY

Recreational marijuana is now legally available in the state of Oregon, which also happens to be one of the most beautiful areas of the country, with everything from breathtaking coastlines to soaring mountains. Head to Portland and sample some of the brews at top craft breweries, browse the offerings at Powell’s, one of the world’s most famous indie bookstores, and of course, visit one of the many dispensaries before standing in line for a legendary Voodoo Doughnut. While you’ll find lots of picturesque green spaces throughout the city, if you really want to be surrounded by nature, visit the coast. At the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area you can rent a dune buggy and explore the 40 miles of dunes that rise up to 500 feet above sea level, while Ecola State Park on the northern end, is favorite for hiking and picnicking with its dramatic scenery.

Seattle and the Olympic National Park, Washington

BEST PLACES TO STAY

While Seattle offers more than enough to keep any vacationer occupied, it’s a great city to use as a jumping-off point for exploring Mother Nature’s abundance of offerings. Dispensaries are plentiful and offer an extensive variety of cannabis products. Once you’ve picked up your favorites, you might want to check out the view from the Space Needle, watch the vendors toss the fresh catch of the day at Pike Place Market, and then venture over to the ferry dock for a trip across the water to the Olympic Peninsula. Olympic National Park is filled with winding trails that lead to magnificent waterfalls, glistening lakes and even hot springs. You can get as high as Hurricane Ridge (referring to elevation, of course), or as low as sea level on the rugged Pacific side of the park, which is known for its driftwood-strewn beaches and fabulous storm watching.

Uruguay

BEST PLACES TO STAY

Located along the southeastern Atlantic coast between Argentina to the west and south, and Brazil to the north, Uruguay is known for its wide expanses of beautiful beach, picturesque fishing villages, and wildlife, including sea lions, seals, penguins and whales. There are natural thermal baths to soak in and gaucho culture to experience. Plus, cannabis is very widely used here. It’s long been legal, so you can feel free to smoke as you walk the narrow cobbled streets of charming colonial towns like Colonia del Sacramento, located just a short drive from Buenos Aires. Or, visit Punta del Este to discover a jet-set beach resort filled with beautiful people and the chance to tap your toes to the rhythm of bobbing yachts while dining on delicious fresh seafood washed down with medio y medio, a refreshing sparkling wine, and the country’s national drink. The capital of Montevideo is safe and fun to visit too, with its colonial charms, one of the world’s longest river walks, a bustling market, and picturesque green spaces.

Fairbanks, Alaska

BEST PLACES TO STAY

Weed is now legal in Alaska too and marijuana shops have just begun to open up in Alaska’s interior. That means you can experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity viewing the dazzling Northern Lights from the comfort of an invigorating hot spring in the great outdoors…while buzzed. To do so, book a room at Chena Hot Springs Resort in Fairbanks. Far away from the light pollution of the city, it provides a stunning backdrop for watching the colorful display from hot springs. If you can’t stay awake, don’t worry, the resort will send out an alert when the lights appear via an aurora alarm service. You can also catch one of the nightly snow coach tours to search for the aurora, traveling to a higher elevation to increase the odds of viewing the elusive phenomena.
